It wasn’t so long ago that any kind of problem with a drain or sewer pipe could only be remedied by digging holes on your property.  This involved a lot of time, effort and expense.  First we had to dig exploratory holes to try and isolate the problem, then dig the main hole where we think the problem lies.  This could be on a paved driveway, under a deck or on a lawn, it didn’t matter, if there was a problem with the sewer, it had to be sorted.

This caused quite a lot of upheaval for residential and business customer alike.  The job would often take a few days and would need a lot of equipment like diggers and skips for the earth as well as manpower to do the work.

Around a hundred years ago an enterprising American plumber invented something called the drain snake.  Initially this was a steel wire with a washing machine motor on one end and a roller skate on the other.  The skate was inserted into the pipe and pushed along until it hit an obstruction.  If the obstruction couldn’t be moved by the device, the site of the obstruction could be measured and calculated reasonably accurately.  This still left a good amount of guesswork as sewage pipes don’t always go in straight lines, but it was a significant step forward in drainage technology.

Over the intervening years, this invention developed into separate tools that we use regularly to service our clients.  The video drain snake, the drain auger, which cuts and removes blockages, and the jet hose.

Sewer jetting uses the jet hose to inject water at high pressure into the drain or sewer in order to flush it out and remove blockages.  It can fit down the smallest pipes and is driven by a generator above ground.  Water is forced straight in front of the head, and also backwards at forty five degrees above and below the head.

This gives the water jet quite a bit of coverage, and with high pressure the water can blast away at any obstructions and clean up after itself with the secondary jets.  This tool is ideal for when fat, oil and grease has built up over the years and restricts the flow of water into the mains.  This activity can remove blockages and flush the system to get it back to normal.

This equipment is a valuable tool when troubleshooting blockages as it is another method in which we can prevent having to dig holes on your property.  Anything we can do to keep the expense and disruption to a minimum we will do.

David Gaines Plumbing Inc. isn’t in the business of making a profit out of our clients misfortune.  We will investigate, diagnose and decide the quickest and most efficient method possible to remedying the problem.
